Paul McCartney Mourns Höfner, Maker Of His Iconic Bass
Ever since the early Beatles days, Paul McCartney's signature instrument has been the Höfner 500/1 violin bass guitar. In 1961, an 18-year-old McCartney bought the instrument in Hamburg for £30. That was McCartney's primary instrument for the Beatles' entire run. His bass was stolen in 1972, and it was returned to him more than 50 years later after someone found it in an attic. Now, the German manufacturer Höfner is going out of business, and McCartney has given the company a fond sendoff. Worm – “Blackheart”
Don’t you hate it when bands just sleepwalk through their press pics? Like, it’s just a nondescript shot of some people standing around and glaring at the camera in their practice space? No blood or naked ladies or daggers or skulls or capes or candles or spiked gauntlets anywhere? Yeah, me too. Anyway, we’ve got… The post Worm – “Blackheart” appeared first on Stereogum. The 10 Best Shoegaze Albums Of 2025
It’s easy to pinpoint when trends in music begin: People rally around a specific band or album, a new scene forms around a shared sensibility, or a particular sound permeates the zeitgeist. It’s more difficult to determine when something ends. After years of slowly creeping back into the fore, shoegaze’s popularity exploded in 2023 due to a confluence of new fans, new bands, and fresh energy. That's the year I locate as the formal beginning of a new shoegaze era, and it’s safe to say that we’re still living through that same period even as 2025 comes to a close. Some of the revival’s most crucial bands have evolved away from shoegaze proper (Wednesday, Hotline TNT, Greet Death), and many of the new-jack fans who never engaged with the genre beyond Deftones TikToks have predictably dropped out, but if you look at the numbers, the fervor around shoegaze music remains at a fever pitch. YouTube Will No Longer Provide Data For Billboard’s “Outdated” Chart Formula
Since 2013, Billboard has been using YouTube streams as one of the factors that help decide the magazine's charts. Yesterday, YouTube announced that it would no longer provide data to Billboard because of the "outdated" way that the magazine gives greater weight to paid-subscriber streams than to ad-supported ones. Has social media made people more connected or more isolated?
I think it's kind of both.. Social media lets you stay connected with people worldwide and find communities you'd never meet otherwise. But at the same time a lot of people scroll for hours feeling alone or comparing themselves to others. It depends how you use it. If you're genuinely connecting with friends and meaningful communities, it's great. But if you're just doom-scrolling, it can definitely make you feel isolated.
