  5. Back in August, Paramore leader Hayley Williams released her solo album Ego Death At The Bachelorette Party. Williams has done a whole lot of interviews to promote the record, but she doesn’t seem to have any plans to tour behind the record. When she does perform those songs live, however, they go hard. A few weeks ago, she sang “True Believer” on The Tonight Show. Last night, Williams released the bonus track “Good Ol’ Days,” and she also played an handful of Ego Death songs live for the first time. View the full article

  7. Today, Stone Filipczak — who is one half of the folk duo @ — released a solo album under the name E.R. Visit. The Philadelphia-based artist’s new LP My Children Will Ignore You, My Children Will Type Amen is a labyrinthine collection of freak folk made during a bizarrely stressful situation with an old landlord. 8. Exactly one month ago, Turnstile had a rather unfortunate incident where a sheriff’s deputy pepper sprayed a concert-goer in the face. There’s a viral video of the incident where bassist Franz Lyons can be seen covering his eyes and warning vocalist Brendan Yates to step back. The incident has been under investigation, and now there’s more footage that’s been released regarding the situation. View the full article

  10. In 2023, all-time synthpop legends Depeche Mode released Memento Mori, their first album since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher, and they headed out on a global arena tour. Now, the group is planning to release a new live movie and album that’ll capture a set at Mexico City’s Foro Sol Stadium. Later this year, they’ll release their concert movie M on DVD and Blu-ray, and they’ll also drop the accompanying live album Memento Mori: Mexico City. View the full article
  11. In 2009, wily pop star Lily Allen released her magnum opus It’s Not Me, It’s You. It was campy and searing and irreverent and honest. Sixteen years later, she’s come full circle with an album that’s completely different, but just as significant (upon first listen). West End Girl‘s closer “Fruityloops” finds Allen coming to terms with the devastation of a relationship whirlwind. “It’s not me, it’s you/ It’s what you’ve always done, it’s what you’ll do,” she sings during the slinky bossa nova chorus. West End Girl isn’t as energized or cheeky as It’s Not Me, It’s You, but it is her strongest and most cohesive album since. Here, Allen trades in diverse, playful soundscapes for woozy and cinematic compositions that emphasize her brutal lyrical revelations. View the full article

  17. Young Guv is all grown up. Just kidding, but Ben Cook’s long-running guitar-pop project is now simply called Guv, and they have a new album on the way. Warmer Than Gold arrives in January, and its lead single “Let Your Hands Go” is out today. View the full article
  18. Sabrina Carpenter was both the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. She did as good of a job as she could with the sketches’ generally weak scripts. One sketch was cut from the episode for time, but SNL shared it on TikTok today. It finds Carpenter in the middle of a boring date with a goofy short king, before she breaks the fourth wall and goes into infomercial mode to pitch you an alternative: a Tall, Plain Boyfriend. 19. Vacancy, the third album from Ari Lennox, is coming soon. The follow-up to the singer’s 2022 album age/sex/location is set for release in January, and today we get a preview in the form of “Under The Moon.” The single leans into a retro retro R&B sound, complete with smoky lead guitar, plinking piano chords, and “shoo-bop shoo-bop” backing vocals. Lennox feels plenty modern when describing her lover, though: “So majestic/ Fuckin’ vicious/ Like a werewolf/ When you’re in it.” Soon she’s howling — an over-the-top bit that works because the song is so smooth. 20. About halfway through Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, writer/director Scott Cooper’s noisy new Bruce Springsteen biopic, I got restless. My seat was uncomfortable. I was hungry. I could see just about every music-biopic cliché coming, and I knew I’d have to get through all of them before I could stretch my legs and find an open burrito spot. But then the picture arrived at the scene where Jeremy Allen White’s Bruce Springsteen records “Born In The USA” with the full E Street Band behind him. The film had already shown Springsteen recording that song as a moody acoustic demo. But when those drum-hits and that triumphant keyboard riff came in, the song was transformed, and so was the theater. I forgot all about cramped seats and burritos, and I was transfixed.
