Mil-Spec Return With New Surprise Self-Titled EP
Mil-Spec back, baby! The fiery, melodic, ambitious Toronto hardcore band has always been deeply underrated, and they’re one of my fovorite acts currently going. Almost exactly two years ago, Mil-Spec released their LP Marathon, and it placed high on my list of 2023’s best hardcore albums. Earlier this year, Mil-Spec guitarist Dan Darrah released There’s A Place, a very different record of acoustic-leaning indie rock. It’s good! Check it out! And just now, I was delighted to get the Bandcamp notification that Mil-Spec have a brand new EP out now. View the full article

Metal Bubble Trio – “Grey And Black Bee”
The multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer Andrew Dost was in Fun. with Jack Antonoff and Nate Ruess, and before that he was part of the sprawling, high-concept indie band Anathallo. His current musical venture is Metal Bubble Trio, who bill their sound as a trip through “a universe of jazz-infused bossa nova and exotica.” Back in January, Metal Bubble Trio released their debut album Cucumber on Third Man Records. They’re going to follow it up quickly with a second album early next year. View the full article

Dua Lipa Brought Out “Indie Legend” Ben Gibbard For A Death Cab For Cutie Song In Seattle
We did it, everyone. We lived to see the moment when Dua Lipa welcomed Ben Gibbard to the stage and sang a Death Cab For Cutie song with him. Is that a good thing? That’s really up to you. It’s a personal decision. But if our friend Chris DeVille was still writing Such Great Heights, his book about the process of indie becoming pop in the 21st century, he would’ve at least had to mention this. Chrissie Hynde & Cat Power Cover Morrissey
A couple months ago, Chrissie Hynde — founder and sole permanent member of the Pretenders — announced a stacked duets album under her own name, featuring artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Brandon Flowers, Debbie Harry, Shirley Manson, and Alan Sparhawk. That album is out today, which means we finally get to hear her perform Elvis’ “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” with the late Mark Lanegan, the Rolling Stones’ “Sway” with Lucinda Williams, and Morrissey’s “First Of The Gang” with Cat Power. Hynde’s rendition with Cat Power is minimal but definitely noteworthy. View the full article

Grimes’ New Single “Artificial Angels” Is Genuinely Creepy
“Grimes is in her cringe fascist era.” The cover art for Grimes’ new single “Artificial Angels” is a collage of photos, headlines, and internet ephemera — some about Grimes herself, some about the artificial intelligence industrial complex that she was early to embrace. That particular line, about the cringe fascist era, is taken from a years-old post on Grimes’ own subreddit. The post itself was in regard to Grimes’ 2021 song “LOVE,” but one could just as easily argue that Grimes entered her cringe fascist era at the 2018 Met Gala, the moment that she first agreed to be photographed in public with Elon Musk. Premature Evaluation: Tame Impala Deadbeat
Deadbeat starts with Kevin Parker’s mewling, high-pitched voice over the kind of loosely flowing piano chords Britt Daniel might write, sounding lo-fi enough that it could have been recorded directly into his phone. About a minute in, he cues up a syncopated disco-house groove built for strutting. More layers of synths, percussion, and vocals pile on, all while that steady four-on-the-floor thud persists. Parker spends the whole song singing about descending “back into my old ways again” — a good bit, since no Tame Impala song has ever sounded like this before. View the full article
