Dutch Interior come from the greater Los Angeles area and make thoughtful, bucolic indie rock. Last year, they released their album Moneyball. In a few days, they head out on a North American tour, where they’ll open for Water From Your Eyes on about half the dates and co-headline with Font on the other half. The distinction between composition and improvisation has always been fraught territory in the discourse surrounding jazz; some artists have argued that all music begins as improvisation, and what makes it “composition” is notating the ideas after you’ve played them. Even the classical composers who are held up as Western music’s greatest artists started out fucking around at the piano, testing ideas, rejecting them, playing something else, then settling on one melodic snippet as the best and writing it down, and gradually constructing a symphony or a concerto in that way. (And even then, classical concertos often leave room for cadenzas — flourishes at the end of a movement — that are meant to be improvised by the performer on the night.) View the full article

Does it bother you when a DJ or Radio show host talks over the top of the music? As a radio presenter myself, I have always had a rule of not talking over the music unless absolutely needed. In some cases you need to cut some time off a show and you talk over the music instead of waiting till the track ends. But I think it sounds bad honestly.

In writer/director Max Walker-Silverman’s upcoming indie film Rebuilding, Josh O’Connor plays a cowboy who finds community while living at a FEMA camp after his ranch burns down in a wildfire. Walker-Silverman recruited two greats from the contemporary folk world, regular collaborators Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington, to score the movie.
