  1. Yesterday, Billboard deputy editor and Stereogum buddy Andrew Unterberger published a piece with some confusing implications: On last week’s Billboard Hot 100, there were no rap songs in the top 40. The same holds true for this week’s chart. It has been a very, very long since since we saw a Billboard top 40 with zero rap songs — 35 years, in fact. The last time that happened was the week of Feb. 2, 1990, when Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend” was sitting at #41, on its way to peaking at #9. This was the early crossover era, seven months before Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” became the first rap song ever to top the Hot 100. Up until very recently, rap has been a dominant force on the pop charts. But for the past two weeks, it’s been nowhere near the top. That’s weird. What does it mean? View the full article

  4. Gary Numan’s sophomore album Telekon just turned 45, and to mark the occasion, it’s getting the reissue treatment. Over the next couple of months Beggars Banquet will release three different editions: a sustainably pressed vinyl, a double-LP deluxe expanded edition, and a standard double-LP edition. The deluxe edition will feature four bonus tracks, and one of those, “Like A B-Film,” is out today. View the full article

  9. Here’s your actually-freaky Halloween soundtrack. Lankum, Dublin’s masters of doom-laden experimental folk music, have covered 2-tone kings the Specials’ 1981 spooky ska classic “Ghost Town.” Lankum originally recorded the cover for Oona Doherty’s dance show Specky Clark this year. Now, just in time for All Hallow’s Eve, it gets a music video by director Leonn Ward, filmed in County Wicklow. It basically sounds like the trailerized version of “Ghost Town,” but good. 10. If you have not yet spent any time with Oklou’s Choke Enough album, I recommend that you remedy that situation quickly. The French singer and producer released her LP earlier this year, and it was #1 on our mid-year list. Choke Enough is a gorgeous blur — all these cooler-than-thou rave and pop sounds refracted through one person’s internal prism, made to sound small and personal and evocative. Today, Oklou releases her Choke Enough deluxe edition. Deluxe editions often seem like cash-grabs, but this feels more like an opportunity to dive a little deeper into the world of that album. 11. I listen to music almost every minute of the day. I always have my station streaming in the background so I can listen for any anomalies. But even if I didn't have the station, I would be listening to music most of the day
  12. Exactly mate! The 80's was the decade that had everything. I remember the sound of those 80's radio show dj's and the old skool jingles. I miss those days so much man.
  13. St. Vincent has a wide array of covers up her sleeve: Rihanna, Tool, Lou Reed, Metallica. The past couple nights, she performed Billy Strayhorn’s 1948 jazz standard “Lush Life.” View the full article
  14. It’s cold and it’s dark early, which means it’s time for depressing music, especially the kind about feeling alone. Voila! Lucky for us Omaha indie rockers Neva Dinova are back with a haunting new tune called “Alone.” View the full article
  15. Faye Webster loves the orchestra. In 2022, the viral indie darling unveiled Car Therapy Sessions, an EP of orchestral reimaginings of previously released songs of hers. Last year, she released her latest record, which was called Underdressed At The Symphony. Now she’s appropriately dressed at the symphony for her performances with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. 19. Minneapolis punks VIAL released their full-length burnout last year. A few months ago, they followed it with a fun single called “Creep Smoothie.” Today, they unleash their new song “Idle Hands,” which seems to be a one-off single for now. It’s a hooky blast of grunge-pop, and I like it a lot. I probably like the video even more. View the full article
  20. Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio is a huge fan of the Real Housewives franchise. Last year, after publicly extending an invite to the cast of The Real Housewives Of Salt Lake City, the show’s Heather Gay joined the band onstage for a game of cornhole during their Kilby Block Party set. Although Baio has put a lot of thought into what his opening-credits tagline would be if he was a housewife, he’s yet to appear on the show himself. Yesterday, however, he accomplished the next best thing: being a bartender on an episode of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, with RHOSLC fan-favorite Lisa Barlow in attendance. 21. For many years, the French artist Melody Prochet has been making gorgous psych-pop under the name Melody’s Echo Chamber. Near the end of the year, she’ll release her new album Unclouded, and she’s already shared the lead single “In The Stars” and the El Michels Affair collab “Daisy.” Now, Prochet is breaking us off with a surprisingly funky new track called “Eyes Closed.” View the full article
  22. Show Me The Body bassist Harlan Steed is making his solo debut. You can never know what to expect with the raucous NYC band, so it would be hard to guess what Steed’s lone foray would be. It turns out, at least for today’s “Meet Me In The Graveyard,” he’s going full goth. View the full article
