  2. What should we call this person? He has many names, and we don’t know the real one. We’re talking about the anonymous South Korean musician who releases gorgeous, idiosyncratic shoegaze under the name Parannoul. This prolific artist has only played live a handful of times, and he won’t be doing that anymore. Instead, he continues to craft cohesive, transportive records on his own, and it feels weird to keep calling him “Parannoul” when he’s releasing a lot of his music under different names. 3. Most people wait until later in life to write their memoirs. UK indie-poppers the Tubs haven’t been around for a very long time; they were a Stereogum Band To Watch just a couple of years ago. But co-leader Owen Williams has done plenty of other things, as well. He makes his own music under the name Cotton Crown, and he used to be in Joanna Gruesome. Williams’ other band Ex-Voïd just played their farewell show a few days ago. As part of the Gob Nation Collective, Williams launched Perfect Angel Press, a small literary operation dedicated to “spiteful literature.” And anyway, Williams’ book might not even be about his experiences in music. 6. Yes yes yes, it’s the Gum posting GUM. You figured it out. You’re very clever. GUM is the solo project from Jay Watson, touring Tame Impala member and co-leader of the Perth psych-rock band POND. GUM’s last solo album was 2023’s Saturnia. After that he teamed up with King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Ambrose Kenny-Smith to release the collaborative album Ill Times. Now, GUM has signed to King Gizzard’s label p(doom), and his new single “Expanding Blue” is out now. View the full article

  10. Last year, singer-songwriter Faye Webster held her first-ever YoYo Invitational event in Berkeley. Over the weekend, Webster brought another YoYo Invitational to her Atlanta hometown, and she expanded on the previous year’s version. This time around, the whole thing wasn’t just dedicated to the art of yoyo tricks. Webster also staged Atlanta’s first-ever LVBL (LiveBall tennis) tournament, as well as a Swiss-system format chess tournament. In the latter event, Tyler, The Creator showed up to compete. 13. If you’re looking for a tidal wave of sounds to consume you this morning, I would direct you to the new Lemondaze single “polari.” Here, the Cambridge, England-based quartet — Isis de Chastelain, Rosie Heard-Edwards, Finn Fox, and Jonty Freeman — has unlocked that quintessential weightless shoegaze euphoria that feels incredible to be consumed by. The song also announces their new EP subtext that’s out in December via Venn Records. View the full article
  14. DITZ know how to hook you. It’s one of the many reasons we dubbed them a Band To Watch. The Brighton combo released Never Exhale, one of the best albums of the year so far, and are not done yet. Today, they’ve dropped two new singles “Don Enzo Magic Carpet Salesman” and “Kalimba Song,” which are available as a 12″ via City Slang. View the full article
  15. A few months ago, Blood split up. The Austin-founded, Philly-based had been going strong for eight years and only got around to releasing their very good debut album Loving You Backwards last year. But, as sad as band breakups are, these goodbyes usually lead to glorious new introductions of other creative projects. Such is the case with former Blood member Julian McCamman. Today, he announced the debut studio album from his project Victoryland. My Heart Is A Room With No Cameras In It is out in January, preceded today by the gripping single “No Cameras.” View the full article

The power-pop/indie-pop greats previously performed on American television in the morning, promoting 2022’s tremendous Expert In A Dying Field with an appearance on CBS Saturday Sessions. Now they’re out there hawking this year’s Straight Line Was A Lie, a campaign that brought them to Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday night. View the full article

  20. What is New York's Best Rock? Depends on who you ask. It doesn’t seem possible today, but in the early to mid 70s, the AM band was the dominating force in radio. In fact, it wasn’t until 1973 that the US Government mandated that all new cars had to be sold with both AM and FM tuners. AM Radio was dominated by tightly programmed music stations that played the same top 40 songs all day. Many songs repeated as frequently as every 45 minutes! So, those of us music fans who grew up during that time were hungry for more than just those 40 records repeated over and over. In the New York Metro area, we were lucky to have a radio station whose slogan was “New York’s Best Rock”. They featured deep album tracks from rock bands of the time. It was around that time that album sales started to eclipse singles sales. New York’s Best Rock, an “Album-Oriented-Rock” (AOR) station was certainly one of the forces behind that shift. For the first time, we could hear an alternative to the hit songs off an album on the radio. They featured deeper album tracks, and it was a tremendous success. So much so, that if you ask anyone of a certain age what New York’s Best Rock was, they can still tell you all these years later. It wasn’t just the music, it was also the DJ’s. Those who presented this music were stars themselves. It wasn’t unusual for John Lennon or Elton John or other big acts of the day to stop by the studios and chat with them when they were in town. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and in 1983, New York’s Best Rock was no more. Today, over 40 years later, New York’s Best Rock hasn’t been forgotten! Magic Matt Craig was one of those fans who grew up in the shadow of New York City listening and loving this great radio station, and it certainly had an effect on his musical tastes. Matt never forgot those heady days, and now, all these years later, he’s taken his obsession for it and turned it into his own weekly radio program. No, it’s not the original station, there’s no way to duplicate that, instead, it’s Matt’s vision of what New York’s Best Rock could have been if it lived on beyond 1983. www.bigappleairchecks.com/newyorksbestrock
